Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay received support from her Aunt Denise at the age of just a young girl. Her aunt was an overnight nursing assistant so that she could have the chance to learn about art literature or theater. DuVernay immediately was captivated after showing her the 1961 West Side Story film. DuVernay learned by example that art could be an instrument for social activism. DuVernay's mother also had social consciousness and taught DuVernay to express herself by means of art. DuVernay was raised in Compton by her parents, however, she spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is where the family of DuVernay's father has lived for many generations. DuVernay's Father recalled witnessing the historical march of the Civil Rights Movement over the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was located in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. The summers she spent in Selma, Alabama would be the inspiration for her later a film about Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in the year 1990. DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles upon graduation. There she received diplomas in English as well as African American Studies. When she was a student DuVernay became interested in producing for broadcast journalism. Her career began as an assistant for CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being tasked to observe the house of one of the members of the jury, and then look through their trash. The duties she was required to accomplish left her unsatisfied and so, after deciding not to continue in journalism, she moved on into the industry of publicity. DuVernay found a job immediately from college, working as a young publicist for a studio. In this role, she launched her own company for public relations called The DuVernay Agency in 1999. In addition to PR, the company has created lifestyle networks and advertising campaigns such as the Urban Beauty Collective.
